Helmut Wengel

Helmut Wengel used to be the voice of the Tour for years in the media, taking on all those challenges that make a broad coverage of the event happen. He installed a full all-inclusive for his media colleagues, along with his own coverage before and during the Tour, with press conferences added pages in regional papers and a direct contact to audio-visual media.

A sport journalist himself, covering among others Olympic Games and World Championships, he remains close to regional athletes, covering their successes the world over.
Being somewhat less prominent in the Tour staff in recent years—after all, even he doesn’t get any younger—he remains a role model for non-pro all-in sport events in Thüringen and beyond as the initiator of the Burgenfahrt cycle meeting event.

He is also known for having edited and brought to the bookshelves the autobiography of cyclist, Olaf Ludwig, called “Höllenritt auf der Himmelsleiter” (A Hell of a Ride on the Stairway to Heaven).
